Civil Mediation

Civil mediation can be an excellent option for dispute resolution. It is a confidential process that is quicker and less costly than litigation yet has the same legal effect. Many conflicts can be resolved by the parties themselves, in a mediation process designed to bring about an outcome that is fair and satisfying to all.

What Civil Mediation Has to Offer
When individuals choose civil mediation, they are taking their dispute to a neutral third party ─ the mediator ─ who will:

• explain the mediation process
  
• help identify and clarify the issues involved in the dispute  
• propose alternatives to resolve the dispute when appropriate  
• encourage and assist the two disputing parties in their negotiated settlement
• help bring about a voluntary resolution to the dispute that is satisfactory to both parties

The mediator may also draft the agreed-upon settlement document. It should be noted, however, that the mediator has no power to decide how a dispute will be resolved. The parties (whether two or more) decide themselves how the dispute will be resolved.
